Life in Haiti
Hurricanes
Hurricanes are a powerful and devastating force for people in many countries. In America, people can be seen boarding up their houses or evacuating when they know a hurricane is coming. In Haiti, hurricanes can be especially brutal. Most often, they have little or no warning that one is approaching, and even if they do, they have nowhere to go. In 2008, four hurricanes hit Haiti and left over 800 people dead.

Most people live in houses made from mud and sticks. This offers almost no protection in a hurricane.
Three people from the village were killed when their home was swept away.

Many villagers took shelter in this two room orphanage. It was standing room only, but at least everyone was safe.

This is the village church and school. The walls are made from palm leaves, the floor is dirt and the roof is tin and tarps.
When it rains, water comes in through the roof and walls and the floor is muddy.
There is a real need to build a new church. It can protect the villagers during hurricanes. It can also provide a safer place to learn and worship in all weather. We are trying to raise money to buy cinder blocks. Each block costs $2.00 and about 3,000 blocks are needed. Again, you can help by purchasing just one brick.
